If someone bored right through the Earth’s crust to the mantle, would it cause a volcanic eruption or what would result?

Probably not.

In most cases, your hole would collapse without reinforcement before you hit the mantle. Or you dig a wide enough hole (think about as wide as it would be deep) to prevent collapse.

Next factor: pressure. To get an eruption you need to find a pocket of high pressure. Now comes the tricky part. How to release the pressure at, or nearly at, the same time. Most likely you’d be progressively releasing the pressure as you dug towards the pocket.

I think the best you could hope for is an oil derrick type gusher. Not really an eruption. Or an explosive base penetrator that can dig fast enough to do a “pop the balloon” scenario. Either one would require a great deal of study of the ideal area and engineering to deploy the method of penetration.

How much weight can be on a balcony?

Most balconies are designed for 40 pounds per square foot at a minimum.

The reality is that it will be higher but this will depend on a great number of factors that you won’t readily be able to identify. A short list would be:

  • Strength of materials used
  • Factor of safety used
  • Were over-sized materials used?
  • Size of fasteners used
  • Quality of construction
  • Age of materials
  • Type of environment
  • Cyclical ware or abuse of balcony

If we fall into a sea of liquid, how hot does it need to be for us to die instantly and painlessly?

Instantly is a matter of opinion, so let’s focus on painless.

Temperature is tricky as you will have some build up prior to the point of execution, also orientation and speed on emersion can become significate. So let’s layout the most likely scenarios.

  • Destruction of the body faster than nerves can fire and be processed by the brain. 15 thousandths of a second is about right for nerve signal and about three times that for processing. Regardless I would think a second or less for the brain to be destroyed would likely satisfy the requirement.
  • Loss of conscience faster than nerves can fire and be processed by the brain followed by the destruction of the body before waking up. Again, loss of conscience within a second would seem to satisfy the requirements with the rest occurring on a slower schedule.
